Clionadh Cosmetics Maize and Toasted: Review and Swatches

Hello hello! I purchased four Clionadh Cosmetics matte shadows over the Black Friday weekend, and three weeks later they were finally in my possession! I am going to discuss two today, as they were part of the same collection, and the other two in a different post.

First is Maize, a bright true matte yellow. The powder was very soft, and I found this showed up really well on my skin, but also quite easy to build and blend. The only thing I dislike about this shadow is the amount of kick-up it produced, even as I used a light hand.  I know blending blushes tend to kick up a lot of powder, but since this shadow is best as one in the crease, I don't know what other brushes to use instead.

I used Maize quite a bit since then, with some warm-toned lewks.

Also part of the Harvest Collection is Toasted, a warm midtoned matte brown. This one is very rich in color, but not as easy to blend for me as Maize. It is a little bit of a superfluous shade in my collection, but I like how much more red-toned it is than the other warm midtoned browns I have.

The swatches below are all the shadows I used in one of my looks. From top to bottom, we have Clionadh Toasted, Looxi's Pumpkin Spice Life, Vanessa's Vanity Tangy Dijon, and Clionadh Maize.

I also want to issue warning for the lewks below that were really just me messing around. Unfortunately the first one looks like I lost a fight with fire:

Maize looks great here, though, and blended really well with Coastal Scent's Baked Clay and ABH Red Ochre. 

The next look I liked a bit better. I used Maize in the same way. I tried to do a halo eye. The BH Cosmsetics Take Me Back to Brazil Chartreuse and Looxi Green Apple is blended in, and ABH Primavera in the center. 

So that's it! I know Clionadh is really well known for its shimmers, but I tend to be more picky with shimmers than mattes, because I feel like I have less ways to use them compared to mattes. And I have way too many highlighters. Overall I like what I purchased, and I did not mind the price point, and I think the colors are unique. Not entirely 100% on the formula, though.

Surreal Makeup Swatches and Thoughts

Today an exciting order of sample products from the indie brand Surreal Makeup came in. About a week and a half ago I placed an order of a variety of samples, for $15.00- all duochrome and lovely.

I thought I would swatch the colors for you, as well as show you a look I did with one of them, and give my thoughts!

Below is a pick of swatches, with no flash. From left to right (and top to bottom) we have:

Lava Dragon, Amethyst Wyrm, and Copper Dragon
Leviathan, Sea Wyvern Highlighter, and Frost Wyrm Highlighter

It was tricky getting a good picture of these shadows- they are much more intense and shiny in person. Though I am wearing Copper Dragon below on the lid, I am most excited to try Leviathan- a gold shimmer with a greeny blue shift.

The powders were easy to work with, but must be used with glitter glue. My favorite way of applying glittery shadows on top of glitter glue is not with a concealer brush, but rather a wide flat brush that has some give to the bristles. 

The rest of the shadows are from the Too Faced PB & J palette.

Overall, I am terribly impressed with these shades. I did try applying one of the highlighters and felt it went on smoothly on my skin. I will most likely purchase a full size of Copper Dragon in the future. It reminds me of Jaybird from the Laura Lee Nudes palette (which I did not buy for obvious reasons- Jaybird was literally the only thing of interest for me in that palette).

What kind of indie makeup do I buy?

This is not so much an expose, but rather a caution I am issuing to myself (and others, maybe). As micro-influences are increasing, and their networks are becoming more and more visible, certain brands are popping up that I do not necessarily think meet the qualifications for being an indie company.

An indie makeup company is short for being "independent." It is a rather generic term that comes loaded, at least is the beauty community, with associations that include the following:

• Recognizable or approachable brand owners
• "Interesting"/non-conventional colors and finishes
• Commitment to some sort of ethical position (vegan, cruelty free, etc.)
• Transparency with ingredient sources. 

 Now, these criteria certainly can apply to many non-indie brands, i.e., brands that are backed by a corporation. However, indie brands especially use these criteria to set them apart from bigger companies. 

My favorite indie brands, at the moment, include:

1.) Fyrinnae

2.) Looxi

3.) Coloured Raine

4.) Colourpop (if it counts)

Let's take Fyrinnae, and examine the ingredients it reports to its consumers:

Now let's go to two indie brands, which I don't think actually are indie. I think they are more akin to Morphe, Coastal Scents, Pinky Rose, and others. I am talking about Blush Tribe and Certifeye.

Let's look at their most recent fall release, for $32, the Fall Fusion palette:

These ingredients are Coastal Scents and Morphe. And similar to Morphe, check out how Blush Tribe started out:

"We started with providing synthetic makeup brushes, gradually introducing false vegan and cruelty free eyelashes followed by a wide range of cosmetics including stunning colour stories in the form of eyeshadow palettes. We anticipate this growth to continue over the coming years." 

Let's move on to its (literal) sister brand (as in the co-owners are sisters): Certifeye. The products are a little more expensive, but with the same exact ingredients:

Alright so before I draw the ire of many people who have purchased from Certifeye and Blush Tribe, I understand starting a makeup business is tough. They have to make enough money and carve out a niche and brand identity, and for many brands that means private-labeling for a while to get started. And palettes are a hot commodity right now, so it's safe to get started that way. 

But as a consumer, that does not draw me in. One, it makes me wary of the bloggers and influencers all hyping the product, especially the micro-ones. Micro-influencers are tricky because they appear to be a regular consumer, but have as much to gain as the bigger names. 

Two, I don't think these ingredients are worth the money. If Coastal Scents is selling it for $12, and BH Cosmetics will sell excellent palettes for less than $20, with a better formula, why would I purchase from these brands?

Are the products any good, though? I don't see anything too concerning with swatches, though there are just not that many reviews that are not by people trying to get the attention of the brand. To me some swatches look pretty dry/dusty, but I have personally not tried the product. 

So, my personal rules for buying indie:

1.) Does the brand sell unique singles? If a brand is private labelled, to me a clue is that they only sell palettes. If a brand sells unique singles, that tells me I can trust them.

2.) What story does the ingredients tell? If they tell me Coastal Scents and Morphe (which are not necessarily terrible brands, I have a couple of Coastal Scents shadows I love, but I paid $.99 for them), then I know to keep away. For now.

So to wrap up, these are my suspicions, so please take them with a grain of salt. I have been buying some indie makeup for about three years now, and while I'd like to believe that these brands are being transparent about their origins, I can't help but feeling that this is not the case, and so I probably don't need to spend my money on them.

Z-Palette Update

Hey everyone! It's been a while since I talked about my z-palette collection. As of now, I am alternating between two palettes- a 12 pan Livancy Palette, and an XL Z-palette. I really enjoy the Livancy palette and hope to purchase at least one more as a way to store and use the rest of my singles.

I've decluttered two eyeshadows, which were quite hard for me:
1.) Dose of Colours Mint Chip (from the Eyes Cream palette)
2.) Coastal Scents 18 K Gold (a gold that was getting no use from me).

The mint one is of such good quality that I technically did not declutter it, but rather set it aside.

Anyway, this is what the XL z-palette looks like now:

Notable additions include most of the mattes from the BH Cosmetics Zodiac palette. I do like the shimmers and wanted to declutter them as well, but the pans are so flimsy I'd end up tearing them.

Also, we have Stila Kitten, which was very easy to de-pot. I figure I will use it up more if it complements a palette.

Moving on to my other palette:

Notable additions include the second shadow in the second row, Looxi Durty, as well as the first two shadows in the third row- Green Apple and Pumpkin Spice Life.

 Okay for the above picture, the middle shade in the left column is a depotted Rose Gold from Ardency Inn. I was shocked at how easy it was to de-pot. The shadow next to it is also new- Looxi Dollface!

The Pink Edit: My Favorite Pink Products, at Different Price Points!

I am very excited to present to you today's post on my favorite pink products. Pink is a very relaxing, sweet color, especially cool-toned pinks. So let's jump right in, from left to right, top to bottom.

1.) Boardwalk Marshmallow Clouds, by Bath and Body Works, $14.50, but I bought it on sale for about $8.00. The packaging of this container is pink, but I am including it in this post because the scent embodies pink. Described as "whipped vanilla, marshmallow meringue, white magnolia, and sandalwood," it is very sweet without being too cloying, and I have been wearing it all summer. The only problem is that it is not very long lasting, so I do have to reapply it 2-3 times during the day. I really do enjoy the scent! 

2.) The Norvina Palette, ABH. $42. I knew that I was going to get this palette as soon as I saw it. I have also been using this constantly all summer. The color scheme works for me, and I just love the rose and purple tones that come out of it. 

3.)  Maybelline Sensational Shine Compulsion in Taupe Seduction, $6.00. Another lip product in Maybelline's line called "Taupe," and not really Taupe. This is a cool-toned rose that gives an intense shine. It is definitely worth picking up. 

4.) Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon, sample (full size $24) in Glace. I received this from Sephora as a birthday gift, and I honestly did not expect to love this. I thought I had this problem of Bite lip products wearing too warm on me, but this one does not disappoint. It's just...pretty. 

5.) Covergirl Eyeshadow Quad in Blooming Blushes, ~$7.00. I have a review on this coming up on the blog, but I will say the stand out shade in that quad is the pink. It is a cool-toned pink that is super soft and shows up well on my skin.

6.) Looxi Beauty Highlighter in Stripped, $7.50. This is an  iridescent cool-toned pink that, as a highlighter, wears smoothly on the skin.

7.) Looxi Beauty Eyeshadow in Tesla, $5.00. I have been on the hunt for a pink frosty eyeshadow and I don't think I will ever come across one as unique as Tesla. The pink is on the bubblegum side, and it is duochrome with a blue and green reflect. It is a gorgeous shadow!

8.)  Wet 'n Wild Megaglo Highlighter in the Sweetest Bling, $2.49. This is a limited edition highlighter Wet 'n Wild had on clearance. Original price was about $5.00. Now it can be found on Amazon for $10. I would not recommend buying that, though, because currently WnW sells Botanic Dream, which I've read is similar. Still, this is a gorgeous icy pink highlighter.

9.) Wet 'n Wild Zodiac Limited Edition Lipgloss, Cancer $2.50. I purchased this because it's my sign! I was a little scared because I was not sure how it would appear on my lips, but it is not stark white at all. It is a subtle pearly gloss and I would highly recommend it!

Silk Naturals Boss Gloss in Big Wig: Review and Swatches

I am on a lip gloss kick, specifically in the mood for lip glosses that are hydrating, but also with visible sparkle. Before I found one of my HGs, a gloss by Pixi, I placed an order with Silk Naturals. They have a line of lip glosses called Boss Gloss, and their most neutral one with visible sparkle was Big Wig:

The product comes in a standard container, but the product is only visible when looking at the bottom of the tube. It was $4.75, and contains 3.5 mL, which is not a lot, but given the lip glosses I have purchased last week cost a lot more, I do not mind too much.

Shipping was pretty quick for me, and I got the product within a week of ordering.

The lipgloss has a light vanilla scent, which disappears once applied on the lips. The formula is not gritty and gives a decent shine and sparkle, as well as a cool-toned rose tint, while moisturizing your lips. I would say for a gloss it is fairly long-lasting, and fades away nicely, leaving behind a bit of glitter.

I would definitely purchase more gloss from Silk Naturals. Specifically, I am interesting in getting both Top Dog and CEO, as those contain shimmer.

So, though the size of the gloss was disappointing, the quality and price is right and I will probably end up picking up more of these in the near future!

Silk Naturals Great Impressions Pressing Kit Review

Loose shadows are inexpensive, and very common among indie brands. Personally, I know that as lovely as my loose shadows are, they do not nearly get as much use as my pressed shadows. I have been researching options for pressing shadows for quite some time, and stumbled upon the NY-based indie brand, Silk Naturals. Silk Naturals sells a pressing kit that comes with 15 magnetic pans, a palette, two mixing spatulas, a container for the pans, and a 30 ml bottle of their Great Impressions gel- a pressing/mixing medium that contains "Ethanol, water, propanediol, carbomer."

After watching their company youtube video tutorial, I decided to go for it. 

I pressed 10 shadows. Unlike the video tutorial, I did not use pliers to press, because I feel like that would make the shadows too brittle and prone to breakage. It was easy enough to do, though I felt like I was eyeballing the amount of gel. For me, the whole process was a bit messy, and I wish I did it over newspaper. 

I'll organize the results by brand, and note the finish of the shadow. This is after leaving the pressed shadows to dry for 24 hours.

Shiro Cosmetics:

-Fleece-Lined Pillow Fort: A white satin. This was the first one I pressed. As this is my HG white shade, I was a little scared to press it. In the pan, I did not use enough product so the pan is about halfway filled. However, it seems to be holding its own and swatched beautifully. 

-Pietrisycamollaviadelrechiotemexity: A matte tan. There was not enough product to fill the pan and the end result is kind of crumbly. Swatches fine, though.

Meech and Mia: Both of these worked out beautifully. I am not going to write up separate comments for either shadow, because something about the ingredients of these powders reacted really well to the pressing medium. Both look gorgeous in the pan- high shine, and are holding together. They swatch smoothly and with intense pigment. 

-Purple

-Copper- **update. After two days, the top layer of the shadow in the pan crumbled. Maybe I was too rough with the palette? Most of the product is in there tightly packed, though, so I am not sure what happened.

Fyrinnae:

-Serendipity: Pressed excellently. Would still use Pixie Epoxy as a base, though, because it is a sheer shadow.

-Rapunzel Had Extensions: Reacted the best to the mixing medium. Swatches very opaque and still retained its duochrome quality. 

-Nepenthe: Not sure if I did not have enough product, or the ingredients in this one was slightly different, but pressing really did not do anything The shadow is pretty much still loose in the pan.

-Mythical Dalliance- This is a sheer glitter. Some of it has crumbled, but overall it is staying packed in the pan.

Silk Naturals:

-"Convertable" (free shadow w/ lip gloss). Useless. In 24 hours it turned back into a loose shadow in the pan.

Dose of Colors:

-Cone (shattered shadow from the Eyes Cream palette). Holding its own and swatches a little more sheer than it used to, but maybe that's because this press is more firm. But overall it is usable and pretty!

Overall, I didn't really have a set method for these, but I think shadows that were "drier" to begin with pressed the best. The ones that were looser and wetter to begin with did not react well.

Would I recommend this: Yes, just know there is a learning curve, and that drier formula loose shadows (ones that don't ball up because of a binding agent) will press more successfully!

This is my super special awesome z-palette. I moved my favorite pressed ones here to get more use. The white shade is "Fleece Lined Pillow Forts," and then we have the two Meech and Mia shadows in the second row, starting from the left. They're the ones that look lumpy but shiny. Finally, the very last shadow, the last row far right is "Rapunzel Had Extensions."

Looxi Beauty Aurora Shadows (Swatches and Review)

So I guess my haul was not 100% over with. As one last hurrah, I did a bit more research into duochrome shadows, and found the brand Looxi Beauty. I picked up a couple of more work-friendly duochrome colors, for $20. Using Angelica Nyqvist's code almost covered the shipping fee that was already pretty minimal for me.

The four colors I got were:

1.) Boujee. This was the winner for me- hands down. I was not sure what the site meant that it contains all the colors of a rainbow- but after wearing and swatching it, it totally does. So on the surface, this appears to be a copper/gold with a metallic yellow reflect, but it has reflects of blue, which also shine a bit green and purple at times. On my eye it looks really elegant.

2.) Bohemian. I am kind of disappointed in this one, because it definitely reads warmer and copper on me than I would have liked. Aside from the fact that it is high quality with bits of purple microshimmer in it, I do have shades like this in my collection. That is my own fault, really, for not selecting shades carefully enough. However, it really is a gorgeous shadow and I do intend on using it.

3.) Mirage. I hate to say it, but the formulation on this one confuses me. It's not smooth, it creates a lot of fall out, and it didn't behave with Fyrinnae's Pixie Epoxy. I have never meet a shadow that doesn't play nice with PE! For my swatches, I have a dry finger swatch, and then on top of primer, but even then there does not seem to be much of a difference. For what it is worth, the colors are pretty, but I could not do a complex look with it- I imagine it would be good as a one-shadow color. Maybe.

4.) Charmed. This is a light lilac with blue-green reflect and is super pretty. It also wears well as a highlighter.

Swatches, and eye looks:

Mirage on top of WnW eyeshadow primer. Not much of a difference. 

For this look, I used Bohemian on top of Mac Paint Pot in Painterly. I regret doing this and won't do so in the future. Because the eyeshadow is so intense already, it got kind of muddy in my crease on top of Painterly. The color is super pretty, though. On me it just needs a drier base. 

The above is my eye look with Mirage. I used Wet 'n Wild eyeshadow primer, and then the Physician's Formula matte shadows to set it and deepen my crease. On top of that I used Fyrinnae's Pixie Epoxy, which did not agree with Mirage, which flaked a lot, and created a lot of fallout. 

I used the same process with Boujee, but as you can see, Boujee looks a lot nicer. I will be wearing this look in the future.

Final thoughts:
 Looxi has gorgeous shadows, but I need to be more careful about the formulas and shades that I choose. I do plan on picking up more in the future, though! If there are any that are in the more pink-brown-gold family that you think are worth it, please let me know!

Shiro Face Products Swatches and Thoughts! (updated with reviews)

My Shiro sample haul came in today! Which was surprisingly fast for a Black Friday order. My last experience with Shiro was okay. I still have the two matte eyeshadows from a year ago, but the highlighter is long gone.

For this order I wanted to try out some tried and true favorites from the brand. I did not want to get full size because I did not want to make the same mistake as last time, when I bought a full-size jar of product that I ended up not using.

These just came in today, so I can't offer a complete review. I'll post the swatches, as well as my initial thoughts.

As of this morning, I've had the opportunity to use most of these products on my face. My review on the products will be in the same font!

The top swatch (under the bruise) is the light grey contour, Do Your Research. I've never really tried a proper grey contour in the powder form, so I am excited to try this. I am pleased with how sheer it is- it really behaves as a shadow on the skin.

On the face, Do Your Research is an excellent contour for me. For reference, I wear shade 110 Porcelain in Maybelline Fit Me Concealer, and 1.0 P in the Ordinary Serum Foundation (mostly in the winter, in the summer that one is too light). To apply it on the face I used the Beaute Basics contour brush and just applied it to the hollows of my cheeks. I don't contour a lot, but I am interested in it, as I do have a round face, but I want to avoid drawing obvious streaks on my face. I found that the end result was very subtle and natural. I would buy a full size of this. 

Second one down is the bronzer Milk Chocolate Frog. The first thing that surprised me was the golden shimmer. Immediately, I drew parallels to Too Faced's newest golden bronzer product. It was very easy to blend on the skin, and I do think this will work nicely.

Trying to apply this as I would normally do with bronzer was a bit difficult. I poured some out of the baggy onto a clean flat surface, and then took my fluffy brush and dabbed it into the product, aiming to get an even enough spread of product. On the skin, the product does blend out nicely, but that golden shimmer. I don't know. It looks pretty, don't get me wrong, but the golden sheen adds another layer of color that I didn't necessarily want. Though I will use up the rest of the sample, I would not buy full size of this. Pictured below is my forehead. Lol. 

The only one that was a little frustrating was the last swatch on the bottom- the brown contour/bronzer The Game is On. Maybe it is because of the amount of pigment in the product, but it was a little more dry on the skin and more difficult to blend evenly. You can see the difference in swatches.  

I did not end up testing this out. I was a little intimidated by the swatch. 

Below we have the two highlighters. Both are beautiful products, and I don't really have anything like them in my collection. The top swatch is Fleece-Lined Pillow Fort, which came as a free sample. I was completely stunned by this one, it is a very light cream color highlight that is pretty opaque and with a slight sheen. I am looking forward to trying this out on the face. *edit- okay, I just went back to the Shiro site- turns out this one is an eyeshadow, which explains why it came off so opaque. Honestly, I'll probably use this in the inner corner of my eye and as a highlighter anyway.

For "...Pillow Fort," I did use this as an inner-eye highlight and wow- I did not expect to like this, but I really do. It is not too shimmery, but does lighten up that area significantly. I did not try it as a highlighter, but I don't think I want to. I will happily use up the sample size of this and continue to use this on my eyes. 

White Chocolate Frog, the bottom swatch, was sheerer than I expected. It is more visible in the full-size version of the pics. It reminds me of a liquid illuminator blended out, but I anticipate enjoying this one as well! 

Finally, we'll end with White Chocolate Frog. Being someone who does love shimmer and sparkle, White Chocolate Fro seems a bit muted for me. It is noticeable on the skin, and does create a highlighting effect, but I am just not impressed with the level of intensity. I am sure, though, people who are looking for a subtle luminous effect would love this. In my initial reaction, I did say how it reminded me a liquid illuminating product, blended in. I will say that I stand by that opinion, and that it performs the same on the skin.

Most noticeable for me is the bronzer. I might have been too liberal with my application. The loose product and container does make it difficult to gauge how much is needed. 

You can also see the contour, Do Your Research, in the hollow of my cheek. It is just a tad darker than what I usually use- my contour stick in Proton by Life's Entropy, but I like that. 

The highlight is apparent also, but way too subtle for me. And look at that inner corner highlight!

So, my favorites are the inner corner highlight/eyeshadow Fleece-Lined Pillow Fort, as well as the contour Do Your Research. I am not a huge fan of either Chocolate Frog, but I will end up using up the samples.

TMO: Mermaid Makeup Edition

One of my most popular items on this blog has been my little rant on makeup, mermaids, and unicorns. Honestly, though, if I had to choose, I think mermaids makes more sense for me in terms of its role in makeup branding? Huh. Maybe not.

Anyway, rant aside, I have a few products that I want to mention today as part of this TMO. As with all of my TMOs, I will try to show promotional images from the brands, and give measured criticism.

The first product I want to mention is really a generality. I am talking about full indie eyeshadow/highlighter palettes. For me, I think the highlighter palettes are a tad more grievous. Here we have Bitter Lace Beauty's "Mermaid Dreams Bundle," costing $214.00

I find this to be audacious and disgusting. Hear me out. 

1. These are all swirled highlighters. The swatches on the site showcase the different tones in each pan. However, what do they look like when mixed together? 

2. This is a palette of highlighters. HIGHLIGHTERS. The difference among them can't be so noticeable that you NEED an entire palette full of them. 

3. How do you even know what color you will get, if the colors in the pan are unincorporated? More importantly, how will you tell them apart (meaning the different shades of white, not the gold from the blue, obviously)

4. Why would anyone pay $214.00 for this?

It's too much. It's too much shiny collected dirt for my liking. These types of products, being relatively rare in the overall market, should be small and precious. This is a bloated, useless thing that no one should waste their money on. No one. 

And personally, it is rather easy to anti-haul such a blatant rip-off. But I am also going to anti-haul the individual pans as well, or any indie highlighters in the same vein. These in particular by this brand go for $18. For me, the drugstore is doing a good job of making beautiful highlighters. For the longest time I liked the idea of having one special highlighter that is a different tone or duo-chrome or something....but honestly? I can just use eyeshadow. I have enough of that already. 

On the subject of drugstore, another collection I will be TMOing is:

The Wet n Wild Midnight Mermaid collection. Now, I think this is an interesting collection for the fall, and I do think trying one or two of these products would be fun. However, I don't recommend buying the entire collection. 

The reasons I would anti-haul this is because: 1. I have never seen WnW do liquid eyeshadows before, and I would be very suspicious of how they perform, especially if they are supposed to be duo-chrome. 2. These lipcolors are cool, but I would never wear them. 

3. The size and shape of the highlighter is killing me. I also hate the design. It looks like the tail got lopped off. Why couldn't they make it square, like their other special highlighters, and just have the fish-scale print throughout? It really is annoying me because the image is so difficult to process. Besides, like I said with my indie rant, duo-chrome highlighters-though very trendy- are not practical, so I wouldn't really use it. Especially if it gives off a blue shift. I do think WnW was smart, though, in that the base of it is golden rather than white, so as to not give a weird grey/white cast to darker skin tones. Maybe. The proof will be in the swatches and looks.

While I don't think this collection is spectacularly offensive (except for that highlighter design ugh) I know personally I won't be able to buy/wear most of it. For people who can wear bolder colors though,  think they will have a lot of fun.
